Ankle Fractures

 

This is any cortical breach (break, fracture, crack) in the bone. 

 

What are the symptoms?

Patients can present with pain, swelling or deformity. Open (Compound) fractures present with a wound and deformity.

 

What is the non-surgical treatment?

This includes pain relief, rest, and depending on the stability (potential for the fracture to displace) a cast or boot.

 

What is the surgical treatment?

Surgical treatment is required if the Fracture is dispaced or is considered unstable. The surgical approach and type of fixation is dependednt on the fracture patterna. nd what bone in the ankle is broken.

 

What does the rehabilitation involve?

  • 2 weeks foot elevated the majority of time.
  • In most cases you can be fully weightbear with crutches by 6 weeks and dependent on fracture pattern by 2 weeks
  • You will be provided with a boot to be worn full time until the dressings are debulked.
  • The boot is to be worn when walking until comfortable.
  • You will be seen by Mr Hester at 2 weeks after surgery where the suture will be trimmed.
  • Physiotherapy will begin at 2 weeks
  • Swelling resolution may take 3-6 months.
  • Aim to return to sport at 6-9 months.

How long will I be off work?

This is dependent upon your occupation

  • Seated job 2-3 weeks
  • Standing job 6-8 weeks
  • Heavy lifting job 6 months

When can I drive?

It is recommended you do not drive whilst in a boot or cast.

 

What are the risks of the procedure?

General risks of surgery

  • Infection
  • Wound healing problems
  • Nerve injury and scar sensitivity
  • Blood clots to the leg
  • Anaesthetic problems

Specific risks for ankle fractures

  • Ankle stiffness
  • Non union. (bone doesn't heal at all)
  • Mal union (bone doesnt heal properly)
  • Failure of metal work
  • Need to remove metal work
